Change of Direction
The job superintendent on the home place told me that plans have changed for the location of the horizontal portion of that well. The log that they ran after completing the vertical portion of the hole indicated directional cracks in the Barnett Shale layer that would be intersected at a better angle by moving the north end of the leg toward the west. The end of the hole will now be in the northwest corner of our property on the north side of FM 916. This will also allow increasing the length of the leg considerably.
Drilling into the curve has been postponed because of problems with another cave in of material deep in the hole. Some shale material has fallen into the hole just below the 7000 foot level. They have been working several days trying to clear the chunks of shale from the hole without causing more of the formation to collapse. If their attempts are successful drilling into the curve should begin tomorrow.
The total length of the leg in the new proposed direction will be a little under 4000 feet. If they are able to go the full distance it should generate a lot of gas.

Hey, that change of direction will safe them some money, too, right? They don't have to pay the neighboring land owners if it's all under your land, right?
